Yellow Tractor Therapy

Helping children, young adults and families flourish in an ever changing world

How can I help you?

Do you feel helpless dealing with your child's angry outbursts?

Do you think your child is experiencing difficulties in managing their anger but are at a loss how best to help them? Do you feel that your child does not listen to you? These are common feelings and I can help you build strategies to help.

Is your child experiencing symptoms of anxiety?

Have you noticed your child starting to feel anxious? Perhaps clinging onto you more, missing school, crying more, feeling scared, upset or refusing to talk or do things? Children and teens with anxiety also have symptoms that we can't see. Their body may feel shaky or jittery and they may experience butterflies in their stomach.

Is your child suffering with low self-esteem?

Are you worried about your child suffering from low moods or low self esteem? Are they having problems with friendship groups or finding it difficult to fit in anywhere? Are they feeling overly self-conscious or shy which is preventing them from doing the things they enjoy doing? Hiding away from social situations, stopping new things and avoiding things that maybe challenging?

Is your teenager slipping away from you? Are you finding it difficult to communicate as a family?

Do you find yourself at a loss with your teenager and no longer being able to connect with them? Adolescence is a turbulent time for the young person and their families. The changes that occur are sometimes unrecognisable. They may find themselves having problems that they can't cope with or experiencing problems that affect how well they do, feel, or act. You are not alone and help is available.

Are you having issues with parenting?

Are you finding parenting a challenge? Being a parent can be challenging and brings you up against yourself. You find yourselves in situations you would never have imagined you would be facing.  Becoming a parent will bring up triggers  within you which maybe painful or unhelpful. It is not always easy to share or express these feelings. A safe space where these can be talked about with the use of a therapist can be ideal during this unfamiliar and challenging time.

Your Questions Answered

What is child and family therapy?

A safe space to explore your family's views and relationships and to understand the problems you are having. It helps family members communicate better with each other. It can help families to change, develop and resolve conflict.

What issues can you help with?

Child and family therapy can help with a wide range of things including:

  • Parenting issues

  • Child and adolescent behaviour

  • Divorce and separation

  • Anxiousness and low self-esteem

  • Changes in family life

We work with problems that children, young people or adults may experience. Sometimes these problems have been present across generations.

What happens in the first session?

For children:  The initial appointment is with just the parent(s) or carer(s) of a child, giving the opportunity to discuss the difficulties in detail and decide what might be helpful.  Sessions are then booked for the child if appropriate.  I meet with parent(s) to review and support the work on a regular basis.

At times following the initial appointment, there are on-going sessions with parent(s)/carer(s) for us to continue to think together about the child's struggles or difficulties.

For young people:  Where appropriate the initial appointment is with parent(s) or carer(s), (as above).  On other occasions it is more appropriate for the initial appointment either to include the young person or to be with the young person on their own. From the initial appointment further sessions can be booked. A decision is made during the first appointment whether the parent/carer would meet from time to time to review the therapy.

For parent(s):  An initial appointment can be made for us to discuss the difficulties you maybe experiencing - whether you are parenting alone, together or co-parenting. Getting support with parenting issues can help us be the parent we want to be rather than repeating how we were parented. We will look at what did and didn't work for you as a child and how what you bring from your experiences is affecting your current family.

Your Child's Questions Answered

What is Child and Family Therapy?

It involves someone called a therapist sitting with you and your family and letting you express how you feel inside. They will listen to you talking about the things that are happening or the things that don’t make sense. They will also talk and help explain things so they make a lot more sense to you and your family and suggest things that could be done to help improve things.

Why am I coming here?

This is not a bad place and you are not coming here because you have been bad or horrible.
You may be coming here because you are unhappy or worried and don’t know how to tell anyone. The people here understand you might be scared but they are here to help.

What happens in therapy?

You and your family will spend lots of time talking in a quiet room. Your therapist will really listen and take your opinions seriously. They will understand your worries and give you practical advice on what to do about your problems or exercises to help.

What is it like coming here for the first time?

It is fine to feel nervous or shy about coming here for the first time. The people here understand that coming to a strange place and talking to people you don’t know might be a bit scary but they will smile and say hello to help you feel a bit better.
It might also be hard for you to talk about your feelings with a stranger or in front of your family but your therapist will be patient and let you talk when you are ready.
